It is distinguished from its British counterpart by its chevalière collar, which fastens high up the neck, unlike the lapel collar favoured across the Channel. Inherited from artisanal trades — most notably the carpenter’s traditional coltin jacket —, it became the 19th-century factory worker's uniform, worn over and protecting everyday clothing. For this reason, it was initially crafted from exceptionally robust fabrics like moleskin to shield the wearer from cuts, dust and heat.
