The denim jacket

3 min read

If there is one piece that embodies freedom, durability, and casual elegance, it is undeniably the denim jacket. Between 19th-century workwear heritage and urban modernity, discover why this new release is far more than a simple mid-season piece.

A workwear classic

Before discussing fabric weight or finishes, it is essential to understand where this silhouette comes from.

The value of the Type II

The Type II denim jacket appeared in the 1950s, succeeding the Type I, which was shorter and featured a single chest pocket. The Type II introduced two chest pockets and the famous front pleats along the placket. It is the jacket of workers, adventurers, and later cinema icons. At Hast, we have preserved this authentic spirit while adapting it to contemporary aesthetic standards.

13.5 oz denim in organic cotton

The secret to a great work jacket lies in its "handle"—that is, the feel and drape of the fabric.

Organic cotton

True to our commitments, we selected 100% organic cotton. Grown without synthetic pesticides or chemicals, it not only respects the planet but also offers a healthier, more breathable fibre for the wearer.

13.5 oz denim

In the world of denim, weight is measured in ounces (oz). At 13.5 oz, this is considered a heavyweight fabric. Why this choice?

  • Durability: this is a jacket designed to last ten years, not two seasons.
  • Patina: a dense fabric has memory; it will break in, soften, and shape to your movements, becoming a truly unique piece.
  • Structure: this weight allows the jacket to hold its shape impeccably, even worn open.

Between Structure and Freedom

A denim jacket can easily look rigid. To avoid this, we refined every millimetre of the cut.

The boxy fit

Current trends lean towards more generous silhouettes. Our boxy fit offers a slightly wider and shorter chest, which structures the silhouette without feeling tight. The slightly dropped shoulder enhances this modern, relaxed look, making it easy to slip a thick knitwear jumper underneath as soon as temperatures drop.

Pleats for ease of movement

You will notice vertical pleats on either side of the placket. These pleats allow the fabric to expand when you move your arms or sit down, offering exceptional freedom of movement for a fabric of this weight.

The details that make the difference

The devil is in the detail, and that is where Hast expertise comes into its own.

The Tone-on-Tone Baby Corduroy Collar

This is the visual signature of the piece: the collar is trimmed with a very fine corduroy (baby corduroy). This textural contrast brings depth and a touch of softness, while maintaining an understated elegance thanks to the ecru shade matching the fabric.

Antique Bronze Finishes and Italian Jacron Patch

To underline the authentic character of the jacket, we opted for shank buttons with an antique bronze finish. On the back, the Italian leather jacron patch signs the piece, ensuring noble material provenance down to the finest details.

Contrasting beige topstitching

The choice of thread is crucial on ecru fabric. We selected a subtly contrasting beige to highlight the jacket's architecture without overpowering it. This is what gives the piece its "architectural" feel.

How to wear the Hast denim jacket?

Versatility is one of the pillars of our wardrobe. Here are three ways to style our denim jacket.

The Heritage Look (Workwear Inspiration)

Pair the jacket with navy chino trousers. Underneath, opt for a heavy white T-shirt. Slip on a pair of leather boots. You are ready for adventure, urban or otherwise.

The Modern Minimalist Look

Ecru lends itself beautifully to tone-on-tone styling. Wear it with ecru denim trousers for a bold, highly elegant look. Break up the outfit with a navy blue jumper and minimalist trainers.

The Winter Layering Look

Do not pack your jacket away when the cold sets in. Its boxy fit allows it to be worn under a roomy cotton overcoat (car coat). It then acts as a stylish, protective mid-layer, effortlessly replacing a waistcoat or cardigan.

A final word

Choosing the Hast denim jacket means choosing a garment with purpose

Why choose ecru denim?

If indigo blue is the king of denim, ecru is its natural heir. Here is why you should embrace this shade:

  • Brightness: ecru brings imte clarity to any outfit, ideal for stepping away from dark winter shades.
  • Versatility: ecru is a natural, warmer shade that pairs with absolutely everything.
  • Timelessness: it is a shade that never goes out of style and transitions through the seasons, from crisp spring days to summer evenings, through to layered autumn looks.

Care guide

A 13.5 oz fabric is sturdy, but it deserves some care to age gracefully. Denim dislikes water; wash your jacket as little as possible to preserve the organic cotton fibres. Often, a simple brushing or airing outdoors is all it takes.
