Each season has its shirt. While linen is particularly suitable for the hot summer months, in winter we tend to turn to thicker, more comforting materials like flannel.
What is flannel?
Wool flannel is often talked about and for good reason: widely used in the making of suits, flannel was originally made entirely of wool. This material comes to us from Wales – and actually means “wool” in Welsh.
Today, cotton flannel is increasingly popular, particularly for making bed linen and shirts, which are more suitable for wearing next to the skin.
The particularity of flannel is to be very soft and "warm" to the touch, which makes it an ideal material when it is cold. To obtain this specific appearance, the fabric is passed between soft rollers with micro-picots rotating in opposite directions, in order to be lightly brushed: its surface then becomes fluffy, almost soft.
How to wear a flannel shirt?
One of the big advantages of flannel is that it is very soft, crease-resistant, and therefore requires little maintenance. When washing, simply dry it on a hanger and smooth out any creases with your hands. For many flannel shirts, ironing is not necessary, especially since they are best suited to casual wear.
For more comfort and freedom – especially desired with this type of material – we have chosen to offer our flannel models in our casual cut,
On a very thin layer, next to the skin or under a thick sweater in winter, a flannel shirt will be ideal for keeping you warm. The relatively thick texture of the fabric keeps the heat inside and prevents the cold from getting through. Pretty practical, right?
In fall or spring, flannel can also be worn as an overshirt over a T-shirt (preferably a plain one).
Finally, when it comes to other materials, you have plenty of choice. With its felted, slightly fuzzy appearance, flannel goes well with rougher textures like denim, virgin wool or thick cotton.
As you will have understood, we are completely seduced by the thermal properties of flannel. A natural, elegant, and ultra comfortable material to spend the winter warm.
