What is flannel?
We often talk about wool flannel, and for good reason: widely used in tailoring, flannel was originally crafted exclusively from wool. The fabric actually originated in Wales – its name meaning "wool" in Welsh.
Today, cotton flannel has become increasingly common, particularly for bed linen or shirts, making it even better suited for wearing next to the skin.
Flannel is distinguished by its remarkably soft, warm feel, making it an ideal fabric for cold weather. To achieve this distinctive finish, the cloth is brushed between two opposing micro-pinned rollers: creating a softly napped, tactile surface.
How to wear a flannel shirt
One of the greatest advantages of flannel is that it is very soft, resists creasing, and therefore requires minimal care. When washing, simply let it air dry on a hanger while smoothing it out by hand. For many flannel shirts, ironing is not necessary, especially as they naturally lend themselves to a relaxed style.

Over a fine base layer, straight against the skin, or beneath a chunky winter jumper, a flannel shirt is ideal for keeping you warm. The fabric's substantial weave retains heat and keeps the chill out. Practical, isn't it?
In autumn or spring, flannel works just as well worn open as an overshirt over a T-shirt (ideally plain).
When it comes to pairing with other fabrics, you are spoilt for choice. With its softly felted texture, flannel pairs effortlessly with more rugged fabrics like denim, virgin wool, or heavy cotton.
