Chronicle of an XXL challenge
At the heart of our commitments, honesty guides every one of our projects and shines through in everything we do. From the choice of natural or recycled fibres to our communications, via the selection of the finest European craftsmanship, we strive to produce as fairly as possible, with respect for people and the environment.
We therefore set out to develop garments that could withstand the rain, keeping you dry from March showers to the last downpours of the season. In keeping with our values, using polluting synthetic materials was unthinkable, a principled constraint that pushed us to be even more inventive.
While it is easy to protect oneself from the elements using plastic derivatives, doing so with natural raw materials is indeed more challenging. By definition, the latter are alive, breathe and interact with their environment, liquids included. This is precisely where Halley Stevensons enters the picture.
Waxed cotton, exceptional craftsmanship
The waxed cotton used to make our jackets and coats is a craft that Halley Stevensons has elevated for over 160 years.
A jute mill founded in Scotland in 1864, Dundee’s jewel quickly distinguished itself by developing waterproof, breathable and durable fabrics. Above all, it was waxed cotton – the famous waxed cotton – that brought it worldwide renown.
To develop it, Halley Stevensons carefully selects exceptionally dense Aegean cotton canvas before carrying out the entire dyeing and finishing process in-house. Singeing to eliminate short fibres, baths to remove the starch used in the weaving process, dyeing, sanforising, sueding, waterproofing by immersion in a biodegradable hot wax bath, drying: Halley Stevensons carries out all these operations in-house, drawing on a century of expertise, an exceptional machinery fleet and a strong spirit of innovation.
“Our team has a background in chemistry and design, which is why our waxed cotton is truly a process where science meets art,” explained Dorothy Arnott, Sales and Marketing Director at Halley Stevensons, in January 2025, in an interview with Toast magazine.
Beyond the Maison’s impressive craftsmanship, it was Halley Stevensons’ level of commitment that won us over. Not only does the mill work with natural fabrics in pure cotton, it also champions production that is sustainable and respectful of the environment. Selecting premium organic fibres, limiting chemicals, saving water, using by-products from local industries to avoid waste: the Maison follows an eco-responsible approach that naturally resonated with our own.
Combining water resistance, breathability, durability and responsibility, the Wax fabrics from the Halley Stevensons institution have been a renowned signature for over a century, which is why we chose these masterfully crafted canvases.
Our waxed cotton jackets and coats
Enough suspense, let us discover without further delay these two new pieces in an emblematic fabric.
To begin, let us lift the veil on this Halley Stevensons waxed cotton waterproof coat.
Available in olive green and ecru, its line recalls our reversible mac from last season. With its raglan sleeves, buttoned cuff tabs, generous stand collar and centre-back vent, it evokes a quiet elegance, marked by suppleness and fluidity.
Made from pure waterproof waxed cotton, it will protect you from the elements like any self-respecting raincoat, without a single gram of plastic. In a textile industry dominated by polyester, that is rare enough to be worth noting, especially in a technical garment.
With a weight of 230 gr/m² and no lining whatsoever, it will keep you dry throughout the transitional season without making you too warm. What is more, the density of its weave also acts as a windbreak, a significant detail when it comes to protecting you from gusts. Inside the right-hand front, you will find a removable panel that can be buttoned at the collar to keep it raised and sealed against draughts. A true barrier against the elements.
If you prefer jackets to coats, we have just what you need. Cut from the exact same Halley Stevensons waxed cotton canvas, our waxed-fabric jacket comes in a shorter, more workwear-oriented version.
Available in green and ecru, it features a contrasting corduroy collar, a two-way zip and a pair of flap patch pockets, bringing together tradition and modernity.
Like its counterpart, it has a handsome regular fit but, for its part, barely ventures below the buttocks.
Meanwhile, the cuff adjusters and collar placket will help shield you from Mother Nature’s assaults, while its raglan sleeves allow complete freedom of movement.
