A French talisman of menswear, the work jacket was born in the 18th century to clothe the Industrial Revolution. Particularly suited to the needs of manual workers, for more than two centuries it has combined unfailing robustness, great versatility and undeniable elegance. Recognisable by its chevalière collar, multiple patch pockets and tightly woven fabric, it stands as an absolute reference in the field of workwear.
At Hast, we have been working on this piece since 2019, respecting its centuries-old heritage while adapting its legacy to contemporary demands. A renewed effort as part of our spring-summer collection, with the release of new work jackets, to (re)discover in this article.
Initially designed for workers and craftspeople, the work jacket has, over time, an essential element of the men's wardrobe. To see this, one need only consider the fate of the famous « bleu de chauffe » (or work blue), a protective overall that has endured in the form of jacket with strong styling potential.
After the shirt, it is this monument of French clothing heritage that we have celebrated, passionately incorporating it into our collections season after season.
A model of comfort, style and durability, the work jacket is undoubtedly one of the staples of our wardrobe, refined year after year with transparency, exacting standards and integrity.
More recently, two new styles have joined them on our rails: a cotton-linen model with a distinctly summery elegance and a bold double-breasted version, drawing on workwear origins and sartorial ambitions. Quite a programme.
Our cotton-linen work jackets
New for the spring-summer 2024 season, these work jackets in 61% cotton and 39% linen are inspired by a French model from the 1950s, not far removed from the painter's jacket. Paired with a crisp, lively 250 gr/m2 fabric, their generous collar and side vents make them references of great lightness and subtle refinement.
To suit every taste, three variations are available:

A bright mottled coral that will suit your summer outfits perfectly, such as light-coloured trousers and a métis jersey T-shirt. Naturally, a casual shirt would work just as well.
- A deep green that will lend itself beautifully to smarter looks; why not pleated trousers, a lightweight shirt and a striped tie?
- A navy blue of absolute versatility, perfect as a workwear jacket or as an alternative to a blazer. Paired with a T-shirt and chinos, you are sure to hit the mark.
Regular fit, two flap pockets at the front, a notched lapel collar that can also be buttoned right up to the top: everything has been designed to serve aficionados of workwear as much as enthusiasts of soft tailoring.
Our double-breasted cotton-linen work jackets
Initially designed for workers and craftspeople, the work jacket has earned its place among clothing enthusiasts. Our designer Sébastien is no exception, and it was from a vintage piece from his personal collection that he imagined the lightweight jackets you see here.
Halfway between overalls and a suit, these sets strike a refreshing balancing act between the world of work and the sartorial realm. In the jackets, the codes of utility clothing coexist with those of formal dress, for a result as accomplished as it is unexpected. A hybrid that feels self-evident, thanks to the rigour of their construction and their sense of proportion.
On the one hand, their regular fit, unstructured construction, patch pockets and weave speak to a working-class heritage. On the other, their unmistakable tailored collar and double-breasted placket clearly evoke the codes of the suit. Two origins that give these jackets infinite potential, from elemental workwear to formal distinction. We offer two for your consideration:
- a beige model crafted in a textured weave of 58% cotton and 42% linen, woven in herringbone. Combining the well-known properties of these two natural fibres, it offers a dry, lively hand, both dense and surprisingly lightweight.
- A navy blue style crafted in a 100% cotton canvas with a silky, velvety appearance. Softer and noticeably less textured, this mid-season jacket is also more understated, delighting those drawn to discreet, minimalist elegance.
Two strong, original pieces, to wear with the matching trousers (or not), with three buttoning options to choose from. As for accessories, we will leave that to you.
Caring for our new work jackets
To preserve the quality and durability of your work jacket, it is essential to follow the cleaning instructions stated on the inner label. In this case, we strongly recommend dry cleaning when necessary. Though somewhat costly, it remains the best way to care for your precious piece over the long term.
If you prefer, hand washing is also possible, provided you avoid any twisting during cleaning so as not to damage the fibres. Then leave your jacket to air-dry on a broad-shouldered wooden hanger.
For ironing, using the appropriate setting is essential, as is the use of a pressing cloth.
