WHERE DOES THE MEN’S T-SHIRT COME FROM?
It has become so ubiquitous that we sometimes forget where it came from, what it symbolises and how it has been used throughout history. Yet this glorious past informs the way we wear it today, and partly explains the choices we have made in designing our styles. First of all, it is important to know that the t-shirt was originally, above all, an undergarment. It appeared in the 19th century and was worn beneath workers’ overalls. Soon, the American army adopted it and issued it to its soldiers. The men’s t-shirt became a utilitarian garment, valued for its strength, lightness and ease of washing.
But industrialisation and its greatest herald, Hollywood, soon stripped the white tee of its military connotations. Marlon Brando, James Dean and soon Steve McQueen wore it proudly, transforming this purely practical piece into a fashion item. The rest is well known: over the course of the 20th century, the men’s t-shirt would take on countless variations, cuts, colours and materials, gradually becoming a rival to the sacrosanct shirt.
CHOOSING YOUR T-SHIRT
Amid this abundant variety, it is becoming increasingly difficult to know which men’s t-shirt to choose. At Hast, we have chosen to return to basics with plain, unfussy t-shirts, placing the quality of the fabric and cut first. We have therefore opted for classic colours, from white to navy blue, including grey, green and ecru. Our t-shirts are therefore easy to pair with your
jeans or your
chinos or slip under a shirt. When it comes to manufacturing, we wanted to address the scourge of our age: the accelerated wear of men’s t-shirts. To do so, we selected long cotton fibres for a weight of 160g/m² and excellent wash resistance. For those who prefer an even lighter, more breathable option, we also offer
cotton t-shirts.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR T-SHIRTS
To keep your t-shirts looking good and in excellent condition for as long as possible, it is important to follow a few care instructions. Wash them inside out at 30°C to preserve the colours and texture of the fabric. Avoid tumble drying, which can damage cotton fibres, and opt for air drying. Iron your t-shirts at a low temperature and never bleach them to preserve the quality of the fabric.
WHAT TO WEAR WITH YOUR T-SHIRTS
