Why does a shirt collar get dirty so quickly?
The collar is one of the most exposed areas of a shirt. It constantly rubs against the skin of the neck, accumulating traces of perspiration, perfume and even make-up throughout the day. The result: yellow or greyish stains gradually appear. On a white shirt as on a coloured shirt, these marks quickly dull the garment’s elegance. Hence the importance of regular, appropriate care.
Precautions to take before cleaning a coloured collar
Check the fabric composition and care instructions
Before applying a product or trying a tip, always check your shirt’s care label. Cotton, linen, synthetic blends… each fabric reacts differently to washing, heat and detergents. A cotton collar will withstand intensive treatment better than a silk or viscose collar, which are more delicate. Also remember to test on an inconspicuous area of the garment, such as the inside of the collar or a cuff, to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Avoid harsh whitening products
When faced with a stubborn stain, it is tempting to use bleach or a powerful whitening product. Bad idea. These solutions can dull colours, weaken fibres or, worse still, cause discolouration. Avoid them especially on coloured shirts. Choose gentler alternatives, such as bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar or Marseille soap.
The best methods for cleaning a coloured shirt collar
Cleaning with Marseille soap
Timeless and remarkably effective, Marseille soap is a valuable ally. Dampen the collar, rub it with soap, then leave for around ten minutes. Use a soft brush, such as a nail brush or old toothbrush, to work on stained areas, then rinse with lukewarm water. This simple tip respects fabrics while effectively removing dirt.
Using bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar
For collars that are really soiled, a highly effective homemade solution is to mix 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with a little lukewarm water until you obtain a paste. Apply it to the stains, leave for 30 minutes, then pour a dash of white vinegar over the area. Careful, it foams! Rinse thoroughly before machine washing with your usual detergent. This method also works on cuffs.
Shampoo for oily hair: an overlooked tip
Surprising but useful, shampoo for oily hair gently removes grease from laundry. Apply a small amount directly to the collar, massage lightly, then leave for 10 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. This product is particularly effective on perspiration marks and excess sebum.
Quick stain removal with a toothbrush
No time to lose? Take an old toothbrush, dampen it, add a small amount of gentle liquid stain remover or soap, and gently rub the collar. Rinse with clean water and leave to dry in the shade to avoid altering the colour. This quick step can become part of your routine after every wear. Cleaning frequency and preventive care
Cleaning a stained collar is good. Preventing it from getting dirty is better. Here are a few simple steps to adopt to keep your shirts fresh for longer:
- Gently rub the collar with a damp cloth after every wear.
- Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the garment.
- Wash your clothes regularly between wears.
Finally, remember that good ironing also helps smooth the fibres and prevent stains from setting in. To learn how to iron a collar properly, follow our advice in the article “how to iron a shirt”.
